It can be particularly challenging if you’ve never done it before, and that’s exactly why we’re here. In this guide, you’ll discover nine tips to help you write a compelling research paper.

1: Understand the prompt

Before you jump to pick a topic, take a pause to understand the assignment or prompt. Are there any specific instructions or tasks that could clash with the topic you like? Could there be a topic that fits the assignment better?

For instance, you’ll have to work with a specific word limit so it might help to narrow down on a very specific topic. Otherwise, you could end up trying to fit in too much information because the topic is too vague. Going through the assignment instructions at the beginning will also give you enough time to address any concerns or confusion you might have.

In addition, make sure you understand the assignment goal and research paper format. Find out whether you’ll need to use APA format guidelines or MLA format guidelines. Don’t forget to clearly note your deadlines. This will help you with set your timeframe accordingly.

2: Know your audience

Who’s going to read your paper? Knowing who your audience is will help you adjust your writing style and choice of words accordingly. Plus, it’ll also give you some idea of the level of explanation you should provide for certain concepts. For an undergraduate paper, you’ll typically be targeting people who fall between generalists and experts. 6: Develop your outline

Next, it’s time to organize all your ideas, arguments, points, and research material into a proper research paper outline. This is when you omit any information that doesn’t support your thesis statement even though it may be highly intriguing. Build a framework for how you’ll present your argument in a logical flow.

Your outline should include the following sections along with a brief statement of what each section will contain:

  • Topic title
  • Thesis statement
  • Introduction
  • Body
  • Conclusion

To further build on your outline, divide the body into different sections where you’ll present a relevant argument or point. 7: Begin your first draft

Now it’s time to build from your rough ideas and use them to prepare your first draft. Don’t be too caught up on perfect grammar, word choice, and sentence flow at this point, as it won’t be your final draft. Your main focus should be on writing and expressing the ideas you wish to present in the paper.

Follow your research paper outline to neatly structure the information you’re presenting. You don’t even necessarily have to start writing from the introduction. Which subheading speaks to you the most? Start from there and you can build on the other sections as you write. If you get stuck somewhere, move to another section and get back to it later. This will significantly speed up your writing.

Even if you end up writing too much or you feel like you’re trailing off, don’t delete it just yet. Set it aside in another document in case it comes in handy later. In addition, keep your arguments flexible as you might need to adjust or abandon it later on.

Here are a few tips on how to write different sections of the paper:

Introduction

As the name suggests, your introduction should introduce the readers to your topic. What are you planning to discuss in the paper? Give a little background about the topic by providing key terms and theories as well as historical details. Then talk about what new insight you’ll be offering and what important issues you plan to address.

When writing the body of your research essay, the best way to stay on track is by dividing it into different sections with topic sentences that clearly define what the section is about. Like a subheading, a topic sentence is a statement indicating what each paragraph is about.

Make sure you assess each topic sentence to see if it’s relevant to the topic, too similar to other topic sentences, or logically ordered. Make sure they transition smoothly from one to the other, and that they don’t discuss points that are essentially the same.

Conclusion

This is where you tie the whole thing together and prove your thesis statement. Start by paraphrasing your thesis statement and summarizing the key points you discussed. Follow up by explaining how those points support your case. Make sure you have a strong conclusion to make your argument more compelling.

8: Cite your sources

It’s crucial that you add your citations while writing the first draft so you don’t have any trouble linking your info to the right source later on. It doesn’t have to be perfect now, but make sure you add the essentials such as the name and year of publication, author name, page number, etc. If you wait till the final draft to cite your sources, it’ll take a long time to trace back where you sourced the info.

You can polish your citations later on while you’re polishing the rest of the paper. Don’t forget that you’ll have to maintain a citation style similar to the format you’re using. So make sure you understand the variations in citation styles between the MLA format guidelines and APA format guidelines.

9: Proofread and edit

This is the part where you reread your paper and edit it for content, clarity, and grammar. Are there any sentences that don’t flow well together? Is there a way to simplify some sentences and make them easier to understand? Are there any misspellings, unnecessary words, or incorrect info? Most importantly, are there sections that don’t make sense for the topic sentence you’re discussing?

Additionally, look for the following common mistakes in writing a research paper:

  • Missing or unnecessary punctuations
  • Interchanging easily confused words
  • Incomplete sentences
  • Contraction use

Proofreading and editing your paper will not just help you create a compelling piece but also help you improve your overall writing. The better you get at detecting these mistakes, the more conscious you’ll be to avoid them in the future.

Finally, Perfect Your Paper

When you’re finally done with the proofreading and editing process, go through your paper one last time to see if it reads well and if the information flows logically. Make sure you go through the assignment guidelines again and see if you followed all the instructions to a tee.

Having taught research essays for over 20 years, I’ve learned teaching students to write a research essay is difficult! Most students are not familiar with putting a lot of information together in a longer project. Frequently, they feel overwhelmed just thinking about starting their work, which leads them to procrastinate and, ultimately, have a very hard time finishing the project.

I’ve learned that teaching research essays is easier for me and my students when I break the longer essay into smaller parts. We work on one part at a time and then put everything together and write a conclusion.

Additionally, I’ve learned that students love to be able to have some choice about what they write and they spend a great deal more time writing on a topic they feel passionately about.

However, I’ve also learned that too much choice can make it very hard for them to decide on a topic, so I either give them a list of Research Topics or ask them to choose a topic in a specific area. The most successful research assignment I’ve created is having students research and evaluate a nonprofit organization.

Honestly, I didn’t know until I got started on this topic the wide variety of causes supported by nonprofit organizations! I tell my students that whatever problem they think needs solving probably has at least one nonprofit working on a solution. Their job is to find that nonprofit, research what they are doing, and evaluate whether they think this work is effective. What I like about this project is that it allows the students to investigate one topic from many different angles, using the same sorts of essays (Explaining, Problem Solution, Analysis, and Evaluation) that they’ve learned in the first half of the course.

At the end of the course, I have short oral presentations. I tell students to imagine that we are a corporation and each of them has been given one nonprofit to evaluate so that our company can decide where we are going to donate that year. Their job is not necessarily to promote their own nonprofit but rather to accurately explain whether they think they deserve our funds. Each student is given an (imaginary) budget of $1,000 to give away to one or more of our organizations with the following rules:

  • You can’t give to your own organization.
  • You must give it all away.
  • You must spend in increments of $100.

As the reports conclude, everyone decides where their money will go and I tally the results, announcing the winners to the class through our online platform, Canvas. Even though the budgets are imaginary, students often are quite concerned about how to spend their money well, and sometimes there is furious scratching out and revision as they change their minds when the bell rings.

Nonprofit Research Paper Organization

I have students write this 10-page paper in five parts:

  • Introduction (Interest the reader in the problem)
  • Problem overview (Exploratory essay on the problem the Non-Profit tries to solve)
  • Organization overview (Explaining essay about the organization and how it solves the problem)
  • Evaluation (Evaluation Essay in which the student chooses criteria and evaluates the effectiveness of that organization)
  • Conclusion (Student makes a final judgment and persuades the reader about their conclusions concerning this organization)

We do peer editing on each of the sections and discuss transitions between sections as well as strategies for making each part of the essay effective.

1. Gathering Research

Students often need guidance in researching. I take them to our university library and help them use our library search engines.

In doing non-profit research papers, I have my students look at the websites of the charities and find research papers about the problems the non-profits try to solve. I also help them find government and international sources of statistics on problems such as poverty and sex trafficking. This particular paper allows me to expose students to a wide variety of library data and information sources and strategies for searching. I often hold a few classes in the library so that students can work with me and our librarians through a variety of databases. If you don’t have a library, you could do a similar exercise by simply letting students bring a laptop, tablet, or phone to class so that they can get help in finding sources.

Structure your work

With all the knowledge and new ideas about the topic, it is easy to structure your work and develop it into a meaningful research paper. When it comes to academic writing, it is always best to keep it simple and logical: make a brief introduction, explore the topic in the body part, and then round things up with a nice summary and a valid conclusion.

Step #1: Set Objectives

And this is where things get complicated because data collection and analysis can take months. It isn’t necessary that you personally collect data so if someone else is collecting data, you have to manage things at your end smartly. You can’t do it without planning and proper scheduling.

If you’re analyzing data in SmartPLS, you’d need a key from your university which remains active for 30 days. Not only that you have to request a key on time after you have collected the data, but you’ll also have to make sure that data is analyzed in 30 days else you’ll have to request for key renewal which takes a few days.

In the absence of planning, you might not get access to several critical university resources and this will significantly delay your research article.

A proper plan will let you put requests for resources well before the time that will be entertained as compared to putting requests at the last moment (that are normally rejected due to resource unavailability or overload).

Step #3: Choose a Topic

Your research topic is of central importance in the research article. You should give special attention to topic selection as everything else will be derived from the topic. A wrong topic selected and you won’t be able to get back on track very soon.

Even if you’re writing a paper as an assignment, you’ll still have to get it published in a relevant journal so you have to choose an appropriate journal first. That’s the right approach to choosing a topic.

  1. You should have an interest in the topic.
  2. You have identified an appropriate journal that’s likely to accept and publish your research article.
